The rosemary flower

Presentation

In this show we want to return to the essence of theatre: an actor and a story. The actor is a puppeteer, who travels around the world with his portable stage carried on his back, as if it were a backpack. The story, one of the most beautiful fables of Catalan folklore: The rosemary flower, in the version collected by priest Antoni Maria Alcover.

“The rosemary flower” is a tribute to the history of glove puppets and Catalan folktales. The show is based on the desire to recover the old portable puppet stages that a single puppeteer carried, and traveled through the villages (on foot!) telling fables with his puppets.

This tradition was very popular in China, but it was also very popular in Europe, and was brilliantly revived by the American puppeteer Bruce Schwartz in the 1980s. We have made the Catalan version of it, telling the fable “La flor romanial”, and with traditional music from the Balearic Islands (based on the traditional Ibizan repertoire of country dance and bagpipes, with flute, drum, bimbau, castanets, sea horn and xeremia).
